Match report:
Sunday October 3rd 2004
McDonagh Park, Nenagh
Kildangan 2-13 Borrisokane 2-11
At McDonagh Park, Nenagh last Sunday the absorbing North Tipp Intermediate Final went down to the wire.
In the last minute both teams were level, when Kildangan were awarded a free on the left touchline 65-yard line from their own goal. After making the journey from his corner forward berth, Tipperary minor star Darragh Egan, wind assisted, hit high over the bar to give his side a one-point lead as the game entered injury time.
It had been the first time Kildangan had led in the contest. A moment later, Egan again pointed another long range free, to cap an impressive individual performance in which he contributed 1-9 that went a long way in securing this North Final victory for Kildangan. Before Sunday's final, the youngster has amounted a tally of 6-29 in six intermediate championship matches, including a hat-trick of goals in Kildangan's semi-final replay against Burgess the previous weekend.
In truth, for most of this game, Borrisokane were the better side. Waking up on Monday morning, they must surely feel that this was a match they perhaps should have won. In the first half, Borrisokane played with a gale of a wind, which blew directly from one goal to the other but eight first half wides saw them go into the half-time break with a slender four-point lead.
In the first half, Borrisokane settled the quicker of the two teams, and although Egan opened the scoring with a pointed free, this was cancelled out almost immediately when midfielder Seosamh Cleary hit between the posts.
Three minutes later, Borrisokane had greater reason to cheer when a Tadghie Slevin free from distance dropped at the edge of the Kildangan square and corner forward, Joe Murphy managed to get a flick on the sliotar that took it past Dermot Hogan in the Kildangan goal. Soon after, Borrisokane might have got a second goal when another ball landing in the heart of the Kildangan defence broke to Adrian Egan but the big centre forward pulled narrowly wide
Cleary was thriving in the centre of the field and with 13 minutes played, he soloed along the touchline before shooting a miraculous point on the run four yards from the end line. Colm Larkin then added his first free of the day to give Borris an early four point advantage.
Up at the other end of the field, Kildangan were finding it hard to come across scores with the exception of Darragh Egan and the forward himself hit a wonder point from the top right corner of the pitch.
Larkin replied with his second free as Borris began to dominate proceedings. Tipp minor player in 2003, Seosamh Cleary got his third point while his midfield partner, Tadgh Slevin gathered an Egan handpass and shot over off the run. Eoin Larkin then drifted into the full forward line before gaining possession and hit over as the men in green opened up a seven-point lead.
However, in the last minute of normal time, a lobbed strike by Pat Lynch into the Kildangan full forward line was broken by Egan to himself and he pulled first time to the net. It was an important goal against the wind. John Maher added a point for Kildangan, while on the whistle, Borrisokane goalkeeper Liam Gleeson added his name to the scoresheet when he pointed with a wind assisted free almost 45 yards from his goalmouth to leave four points separating the sides at the break.
Although they dominated the opening period, it did not look optimistic for Borrisokane at half-time as they faced into the second half wind with a mere four-point cushion to protect. However, Borris began the second half with great intensity to show that this contest was in no way yet decided.Padraig Hogan pointed within a minute of the resumption and soon after Philip Austin set off on a solo run past three defenders, before he handpassed past an onrushing defender to the unmarked Murphy, who pulled to the net from three yards for his second goal.
Kildangan trailed by eight points but slowly and surely began their comeback. Egan hit over from a free and Lynch pointed a 65. Then the blue and gold introduced Brian Kelly and Tommy Connors and the former of the two, spurned a great opportunity when his mis-hit shot from 10 yards tricked narrowly wide. The sides then swapped free as the game entered the final quarter.
By this stage, the Kildangan's half-back line were completely on top, winning every challenge that came their way, while Hugh Flannery was causing problems to the Borrisokane defence with his penetrating solo runs. However, the Borris defence were clearing a lot of ball themselves, as Adrian Hogan and Slevin were particularly prominent in clearing danger.
Egan hit over a brace frees and with seven minutes remaining they got another decisive goal. Conor Hayes gathered at the right side of the full forward line, rounded his marker, darted left and shot at the near post for Kildangan's second goal, which levelled the game with 2-10 apiece.
Borrisokane came again and when Austin was fouled Larkin hit over as Borrisokane once again took the lead. Darragh Egan levelled seconds later when a snapshot destined for the top of the net sailed narrowly over. When it seemed that the outcome might end in a draw Egan then hit his two late strikes to give Kildangan victory on the day.
Both sides now advance to the latter stages of the county championship. Don't be surprised if they meet again in the final.
