Kildangan 3-11 Moycarkey Borris 2-11
Kildangan advance to the intermediate county final after an impressive semi-final win over Moycarkey-Borris in Semple Stadium, Thurles last Sunday.
In a well-contested affair the North Tipperary side thoroughly deserved their victory with a powerful second half performance that saw them gain an upper hand on their opponents. Indeed, it took a Darragh Egan goal in the 59th minute to finish this game as a contest and while Moycarkey did hit the back of the net in the third minute of injury time, it was a matter of too little too late for the Mid-Tipperary side. Although Egan opened the scoring in the first minute with a pointed free, it was Moycarkey who opened the brighter to this entertaining contest. Robert Doran tipped over for his first point after seven minutes, which he followed up moments later when he left his right corner forward berth to gain possession in the left corner and strike accurately over. Brian Moran raised another white flag before Doran found Tipp Under-21 player David Sheppard who pointed. Joe Dixon then hit over from the right side of the field to increase his side's early lead to four points.
During the opening quarter Kildangan were finding it difficult to settle and accumulated six wides during this period. It took a soft free conceded by Morcerkey's Eamon Ryan, who was adjudged to have thrown the ball, which helped Kildangan get back on the scoreboard. County minor star, Darragh Egan hit between the posts, which he followed up with his third pointed free. For the remainder of the first half, Kildnagan were the more dominant side. Egan came close to a goal when his rebound effort drifted wide but in the 25th minute, he found the back on the net from a penalty. Kildangan's Conor Hayes, bearing down on goal, was knocked to the ground by the out rushing Austin Cooney in the Moycarkey goal and Egan blasted the resultant penalty to the roof of the net. A minute later, Colm McGrath extended Kildangan's lead with their first score from play, when perhaps another goal looked a decent possibility.
Moycarkey rallied when William Dempsey replied with a point and with half time approaching Shepard ran onto a breaking ball 30 yards from goal before laying off to Michael Hassett who buried an unstoppable shot into the back of the Kildangan net. Liam Karol Flannery hit over in injury time to leave a point between the sides at the break. Although Kildangan had started slowly, an accumulation of ten first half wides was the main reason they were behind at the break. It took six minutes of the second half for the North champions to retake the lead. Two points separated the sides when a surging run by Hugh Flannery through the heart of the Moycarkey defence ended when he pulled the sliotar across the goal where McGrath was on hand the pull first time to the net. Dempsey evened up the scores with a pointed 65. However, an Egan brace saw Kildangan edge into the lead once again, which was followed up with a point on the run from Hugh Flannery. Another Egan score this time coming from a 65 left a goal separating the side. With the game entering the final quarter, the North champions were hurling well with Gerry Slattery and in particular Dan Hackett were lording possession in the half back line. McGrath and Connors added scores to leave five between the sides with eight minutes to go.
In the final stretch, Dempsey first pointed from play before adding a 65, when Kildangan struck for their third goal. Substitute Pat Lynch sent a ball high into the full forward line a ball and from in front of the Moycarkey goal, Darragh Egan flicked on the dropping ball past the helpless Cooney on the line to put the game beyond doubt. In the third minute of added time, Dempsey shot to the net from a 35-yard free, but the North Tipperary side had already done enough to secure victory. They now go on to face Moyne-Templetuohy in the final.
